چکیده

A recently introduced indirect haemagglutination kit for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae antibodies is compared with the standard method complement fixation. It is concluded that the kit provides a rapid, simple, and moderately sensitive means of detecting antibodies and, in some cases, enables these to be detected in the early, acute stage of infection.

Comparison of Gen-Probe commercial kit and culture technique for the diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

The Gen-Probe rapid diagnostic system was compared with a culture method for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in clinical specimens. Of 116 clinical specimens, 103 (88.8%) yielded identical results. The relative sensitivity and specificity of the probe were both 89%. Rapid turnaround time and its sensitivity and specificity indicate that the probe test is a practical method for the rapid ...

Relevance of serology for Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection among children with persistent cough.

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Cough and tracheobronchitis are the commonest features of M. pneumoniae infection but diagnosis based on clinical symptoms that may be due to other respiratory pathogens is impossible. Thus laboratory testing for M. pneumoniae is particularly important. Correct and rapid diagnosis of M. pneum...

Comparison of real-time polymerase chain reaction and serological tests for the confirmation of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in children with clinical diagnosis of atypical pneumonia.

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common pathogen of respiratory tract infection in children, and its correct and rapid diagnosis is a clinical challenge. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been used frequently for the detection of this pathogen. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records from all children with a clinical diagnosis of mycoplasma pneumonia and whose respiratory sa...

Neurological disease associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. PCR evidence against a direct invasive mechanism.

Aims-To investigate the pathology in patients presenting with sudden onset neurological illnesses associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.Methods-M pneumoniae infection was diagnosed by a highly rigorous interpretation of serological markers initially using complement fixation, agglutination and IgM antibodies. Confirmation of the serological diagnosis was achieved using indirect immuno...

Prescription Surveillance and Polymerase Chain Reaction Testing to Identify Pathogens during Outbreaks of Infection

Syndromic surveillance, including prescription surveillance, offers a rapid method for the early detection of agents of bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases. However, it has the disadvantage of not considering definitive diagnoses. Here, we attempted to definitively diagnose pathogens using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) immediately after the prescription surveillance system detected ...
